HERE ARE THE VITAMIN SUPPLEMENTS I TAKE DAILY & WHY

In today’s world, it’s not as easy to receive all of our nutrition by consuming foods. When taking vitamins, many times we take what we believe we need according to what we’ve seen on tv, social media, etc. My question to you is who are your resources? And, are you, in fact, taking what your body needs to get better and/or stay healthy?

WHY I STARTED TAKING VITAMINS

At the beginning of 2017, I was diagnosed with Anemia, Hypertension & a Vitamin D3 deficiency. Seriously, I was a mess. I knew I wasn’t feeling like myself and needed answers. The first doctor I could found diagnosed me with these three conditions and I left with 2 prescriptions since I was recently started taking an iron supplement. I was taking the proper medications and vitamin supplements in higher dosage to help me get what I needed and fast. I remember taking Lisinopril for Hypertension in high dosage. This caused an array of other complications in my body. I was taking 65mg of Iron (over the counter) and 10,000 IUs of Vitamin D3. I took one tablet each week for 12 weeks.

HOW DID I KNOW WHAT TO TAKE?

After my diagnosis, I was eventually able to find a Physician & Gynecologist I could trust. The first Physician I found was not so good. I would arrive 30 minutes early to my appointments just to have to wait 30 minutes to an hour past my appointment time until I was seen. Then after being seen, she wouldn’t want to spend no more than 5 minutes with me. I would have to get her attention before leaving the room to get any additional questions answered. She would seem a bit bothered that I was slowing her down from just prescribing me something new and kicking me out of the door. I eventually found a new Physician who was very helpful. He was attentive to how I felt, listened to my concerns about my health, and gave me peace of mind after running the appropriate tests. He ran all of the tests to check my main organs including my thyroid gland. Everything came back negative with these tests except my Vitamin D3 & Iron. Both were better, but there was still room for growth. My Gynecologist also wanted me to take the entire vitamin B complex to boost my hormone vitamins levels. He prescribes individual supplements which were better than taking one multivitamin.

My Gynecologist was the one who suggested higher levels of Vitamin D3. He’s really big on being above normal & being at my healthiest. My Iron levels were back to normal & healthy so both doctors recommended it was safe to stop taking the Iron supplement. I still take Iron supplements during my menses, because I would rather be safe than sorry. I know what it feels like to be Anemic and it’s a serious pain. I went from being cold all the time to extreme exhaustion after being awake for just a few hours each day. No, I don’t want to go down this road again. Back on my Gynecologist, he was able to help me with a diagnosis on my feminine side which was actually causing the Anemia. We’ll discuss this in a later wellness post.

WHAT I CURRENTLY TAKE & WHY?

I’m currently taking 1,000 to 2,000 IUs of Vitamin D3. A little over 2 1/2 years ago, I was taking this vitamin in an additional 9,000 IUs, because of this deficiency. I’m happy that I’ve made progress! I’m taking 65mg of Iron on an as-needed basis. In addition to these supplements, I take 250mg of Magnesium to promote a healthier heart & for a better rest during the night. I also switched from individual B complex vitamins I would take individually and take them in a liquid dosage. This dosage releases them in my bloodstream a lot faster than in pill form. However, I intend on going back to taking the individual vitamins, because the liquid form had sugar and causes mucus after taking one dosage. I thought it was just the brand I was using for the vitamins, but I tried 2 different brands and it’s the same effect.

WHY ARE TAKING THE RIGHT VITAMINS SO IMPORTANT?

You know there’s this little, but a big thing called balance, right? I’m a Libra. I know all about balance. Too much of anything is bad for you. I remember when I used to drink dairy milk. The companies will always promote vitamin D. In orange juice companies promote both calcium and vitamin C. There are so many other pieces to this puzzle besides the normal few vitamins. Yes, we see these supplements in the vitamin aisle, at health stores and drug stores, but what do we really need? We’re learning more about vital supplements the body needs to give us what we’re missing. Be the one who takes charge of your health. If you’re unsure of what supplements you should be taking, and what your body needs, visit your doctor and get a wellness exam with full blood work completed. This will help you know where you stand and where you can improve with your health.
