National School Choice Week & Why It Matter

It’s the end of National School Choice Week. For one whole week, most schools celebrate school spirit, fund raising and other events to help their schools. Here in Las Vegas, we celebrated with performances, and felt great about the schools we CHOSE for our youth. For most families around the country, its the other way around. This week was exciting for both parents and students, because it’s personal. We all made a choice to pick the school that is best for our families.

National School Choice Week is celebrated, because parents and students made the choice to be different. There was an auditorium full of Charter schools, Private schools and Homeschoolers celebrating their choice to be different. We celebrated taking charge of our family and doing what is best for us.

My sons after the Assembly @ UNLV

This is a big deal, because most people are used to doing what they are told to do. We were told to put our children in the school the state and district said was best. We had to put our children in schools based on address.

“Teachers felt being the President of our “beloved” country was the highest achievement in one’s life.”

In middle School, I grew up on the south side of Chicago. To be specific, 75th and Halsted. If you’re familiar with that area and/or grew up in the 90’s, it was the last place you would want to live. If you had children and wanted more for your family, you would have ran for you all lives! Yes, it was that bad. We’ve witnessed the after effects of drive by shootings, ran from gang members, experienced bullying, constant fighting, etc. As a parent on a mission, I made it my duty to focus on my kid’s needs.

They needed me active in their education and a strong school system that cared about their present and future. This is what encouraged me to seek better options. Since the beginning of my sons’ education, they have attended charter & magnet schools. They have also been Gifted and Talented students since they were young enough to be tested. My sons have also held honor roll for most of their education.

What encouraged me to make this decision was paying close attention to the school politics and favoritism. Nowadays, most teachers are proud collecting a paycheck from a job like many others who work in Corporate America. Teachers felt becoming the President of our “beloved” country was the highest achievement in one’s life. This is pure b.s. When teachers would degrade students, because their way of teaching wasn’t working for the students. Yes, I’m being honest. My oldest son, Jordan was in 3rd grade when a Texas Teacher (black woman) told him he would never be a leader nor amount to anything in life. My son came home in tears and confused. Her behavior changed his outlook on life at such a young age. He no longer wanted to strive for success in the classroom. I teach my sons to be a leaders and make a difference in this world. This was when I began to seek alternatives. We’ve also experienced teachers comparing their grandchildren to their students. In second grade, my youngest, Jovan was the top student in his class. In his teacher’s eyes, he wasn’t good enough. He was a perfectionist so it counted against him. He was bullied and was treated horribly in just 2nd grade. As you can see, we’ve had our fair share of the school systems.

As a parent, I made a choice. That choice was to find a better education solution for my sons. It was to put family first. I chose to work around our lives versus work our lives into everything else.

“Our children grow up too fast and pick up behavior habits too quickly for us to be absent from their lives.” @missnishabee

This is the second year my sons have been attending Nevada Connections Academy. It wasn’t easy adjusting from a brick and mortar school to a virtual school setting. However, we stuck through it and it has been rewarding for our family. My sons have a great relationship with their teachers. I have built relationships with their teachers as well. We enjoy the field trips, live lessons, and extra curricular  activities. We have the freedom to work at our own pace & have access to the best education they ever had.

As we’re in the end of the week, remember this. We all have a choice. The school is not a babysitter nor should the school be scolded for not meeting your family’s needs. No matter what your current situation is, your children deserve the best start in life. Never forget you have a choice. I used to be so angry and frustrated with the schools. I later learned that when you know better, you do better.

A Healthy Life Starts With These 3 Factors

Beauty & wellness are together whether we want to admit it or not. There are tons of beauty products that promise results when you use them. There are wellness products that promise the same. However, to live a healthy life, you must take these three keys factors into consideration in everything you do.

Before I dive into these three factors, it’s best to remember that you can do whatever you feel is best for you. Do what makes you happy. After going Vegan over a year ago, I researched a lot. I learned through trial and error whether it was physical or mental. I found out a ton of information online and at the library. I purchased books from Barnes and Noble which helped me on my journey to a healthier, happier life.

The three factors are: mind, body and spirit. There is so much that falls under these 3 categories. To keep this short, today I’m bringing general info that may give you an idea of why having all three aligned with the universe can bring you a healthy life. From my journey, I’ve learned that this is the only way to live a happy and healthy life. I will elaborate on what has helped me find peace, embrace love and how blessings keeps coming our way as a family.

Mind. The mind literally deals with a mentality of how we deal with every aspect of life. We can have a mentality to succeed, or a mentality to fail. It’s all in how we think. It’s based on how the mind works and how we  perceive this world. I went from having a mentality of barely getting by just waking up everyday to becoming a better version of myself. When I became pregnant with my first son at 20, my mentality shifted from waking up and getting by to becoming the best mother and woman I could be. I went from being angry and misunderstood to being optimistic and having a clue of what I wanted to do with my life. Around the time my second son was born 2 years later, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with my life. There was no turning back and I made the sacrifices necessary to accomplish those goals. One of those goals was investing in beauty school to become a Cosmetologist. It took me 2 1/2 years, but it was so worth it.

The mind is a very powerful tool that can think for us automatically or we can monitor our thoughts more frequently by taking our minds off auto pilot. In other words, simply taking control of our lives. We literally become what we think about. So whatever we think about frequently, and ponder on with passion will come to past whether it is good or bad. This even goes for being around people who don’t wish the best for you. If someone says hurtful things to break your mind and spirit, it’s easy to start believing it subconsciously. This is just because our subconscious mind picks up everything and will store it for later. This can make us second guess ourselves when someone thinks something negative about us. This is why it’s so important to limit the individuals in our lives to those who only wish the best for us.

Once taking the time to focus on the positive outlook in life and stop trying to control the little that we can’t control, the mind becomes a healthier place. Focus on the great things you want & not how bad something is going right now. This makes all the difference to be in the driver’s seat of your life. This is the first step to reaching the goal of a healthy life.

“You control 90% of your life.”

Body. The body is tool to utilize. The body is extremely amazing and can help us have longevity in this life. Unfortunately, some still haven’t taken into consideration the harmful toxins we eat that are marketed as food. The truth is very little on the market is real food. For instance, I was having a conversation with a few ladies recently. We were talking about food (one of my favorite topics these days). A couple of these ladies were like, they know the harmful effects of meat and dairy products. They had no interest in changing there ways or even taking a healthier lifestyle info consideration. I always mention to people I mentor about how important it is to take baby steps into greatness (mentally & physically). We’re not perfect. I remember when I was starting out on a Vegan diet and how I got really sick one time for eating a few chicken wings from a restaurant. It’s easy to crave something, but hard to deal with the consequences.

I mentioned the health benefits of not eating flesh and how important it is to live a healthier lifestyle to these women. They had no interest helping themselves to possibly save their own lives not their families’ lives. As a melanated woman in America, lately, I’ve been seeing women fight illness & diseases like breast cancer. Many women, especially those of color, are dealing with hysterectomies and are headed towards disaster if some things don’t change. Women of color are number one for breast cancer, hysterecomies and other feminine related illnesses. I tell these ladies all the time, it’s starts with the food in our kitchens, in the fast food restaurants, in the flesh of dead animals and drinking another species milk.

Our bodies are our temple and is the only tool to thrive in this physical world. We can’t pray over food that we know harms us. This just doesn’t make sense when you honestly think about it. I was raised Baptist and we used to pray over our pork chops, dead collard greens that took 3 hours to cook, and fried chicken. When I spent 10 years in a non-denomination, Hebrew Israellite church, we didn’t eat unclean food such as pork, duck and unclean seafood. However, we ate beef, lamb and all of these other precious animals. My point is that we were still eating dead flesh. Now that I have changed my lifestyle, I try my hardest to make the healthiest decisions for my temple. Yes, some days I have a moment, but I still make my best effort to take care of my temple. The human body is the second key to a healthy life. When we know better, we should do better.

“Flesh was never created, by our creator for human consumption.”

Spirit. It’s so important to have a connection with ourselves and our higher power. I remember when I used to believe I was just this walking flesh on this planet. I’m so far pass this now :). When I learned I was energy, I was power, and electric being who was made my creator image, It was a life changer for me. I started to live a life that I didn’t know was possible. I meditate, pray and listen to music that sits well with my soul. I started to do things that opened up doors for me in my life that I would not have completely understood just 2 years ago. I started to understand the female energy and understand why it was so important for me to accept who I was. There was a point of time when I was lost and confused about myself as a woman. Tradition tells us that women are less dominant and inferior to men regardless of the super power men see we possess everyday.

Our spirit should be at peace everyday regardless of the obstacles we face. Its hard to be at peace and on track to a healthier life when the world is in chaos (especially is you follow to horrible news). It’s even worst with going to a job that doesn’t resignate with who you are. It’s even worst having children in this society. Let’s not even mention the public school systems. We have to find peace and have love in our spirit to be healthy, happy and to be fulfilled. Authentic love is something the world lacks, but it needed abundantly. This is the third factor of having a healthier life.

If you’re looking for ways to be at peace with yourself, focus on building awareness to your mind, body and spirit. Spread love and allow yourself to be loved. Eat healthier foods to promote a healthier body. Let go of anything that doesn’t bring you happiness (this can be difficult, but it’s so worth it). Pray & meditate frequently. Put a smile on someone’s face. The universe will send you everything you need you’re ready to receive it 😉

Why You Should Eat Little To No Corn & Soy Products

Soy and corn are very popular and used for many food products, but they aren’t as safe as some may believe. Here are reasons why I eat little to no corn and soy products.

Corn used to be my favorite veggie! It’s huge, bright yellow, really sweet and I loved it! I rarely ever eat corn, because it’s a GMO. I was beyond disappointed to know my love, the corn on the cob wasn’t real anymore. It is grown with harmful pesticides that can damage our bodies. Corn wasn’t naturally gigantic in size. This indicates growth hormones have been used for a long time. It’s sweet, because of added sugars. Synthetic sugar isn’t recognized in the body. Sugar stores fat in the body. These were more than enough reasons to let go of my corn.

Soy on the other hand is a man made invention just like many other foods, animals, and so forth. When I gave up dairy milk four years ago, I started to drink soy milk. I met a lady  who warned me about drinking soy and how it affects the female body. Soy has added estrogen which comes from certain plants. From my research, the resources have made claims that it doesn’t harm women. I personally decided not to take that chance anymore. There’s so much that throws our hormones off balance that I refused to take a gamble with soy. Soy is also known to have been present in certain paint products. Some also have made claims that soy is strong enough to change someone’s sexual orientation. I stopped eating tofu, I changed my buttery spreads to soy free and no longer use soy sauce. I read just about every label on my products before I make purchases, because I’m aware of my temple and treat it special.

If you’ve wondered about these two “foods” I hope this information is helpful to you.

2 Natural Sweeteners You’ll Love

textgram_1502232859[1]It’s hard to find a natural sweetener that taste good, dissolves easily, healthy and doesn’t have a horrible after taste. There are so many so called alternative ‘sweeteners’ on the market that promise they are the best. Yeah right! I’m here to tell you about 2 natural sweeteners that doesn’t need help to be delicious! They are safe to use as much as you like, naturally created by Mother nature itself and can be used in countless ways! How do I know this? I’ve been using these 2 ingredients since I’ve started my meatless journey close to a year ago! I use them for like everything sweet!

What’s the first natural sweetener that has nothing to do with the addictive sugar cane or its deadly alternatives?

Agave Nectar is the best of the best of the best when it comes to a sugar substitute! In my home, we substitute it for everything! We use it on…

Pancakes and waffles, steel oats & grits, tea, coffee, sweet sauces, lemonade, etc. We use Agave in everything! I no longer by syrup, sugar or anything that isn’t going to benefit our heath.

The 2nd natural sweetener is ORGANIC DRIED DATES!

Dates are so delicious and are great to add sweetness to desserts, smoothies, ice cream, oatmeal or whatever else you like sweet! Unlike Agave Nectar, dates look similar to prunes. They also have a huge seed right in the center that can’t be chewed or swallowed. After removing the seeds from this fruit, it can be chopped up and added to whatever you like! It can also be shredded in a blender. I love to add this to our home made banana ice cream, and home made smoothies! This fruit is so sweet and actually has a nutty flavor. If you haven’t tried this natural fruit, you must give it a try!

So why would I recommend these two foods over everything for sweetness? These two are still natural! Most of our foods aren’t food. They cause harm our temples unlike foods that are grown and prepared in their natural state.

Tips to Start a Healthy Food Lifestyle

It can be challenging starting a healthy eating plan that actually works. We live in a world where most of our food is a joke and is making huge corporations wealthy. Some say not to worry about buying organic fruits and vegetables because there’s a very little difference while others highly recommend these foods. No matter how difficult it may be, I’m here to tell you that there’s still hope to live a better life and there’s no need to settle in poor eating habits. Here are some tips that can help you get started in the right direction!

Consuming Less Starch & Wheat

Pasta can be a tasty, fulfilling dish, but there can be some problems with eating too much of it. Pasta is full of chemicals that can cause complications in the body including cancer and other illnesses. Too much starch isn’t good for our bodies period. It’s not easy to just go cold turkey and let it go either. Believe me, I still enjoy a good pasta dish from time to time. Wheat contains gluten which is glue. It causes our intestines to stick together. Just think about that for a moment. We eat unhealthy foods that do not leave our bodies in an appropriate amount of time, then we’re eating gluten that makes our intestines stick together like glue. That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. How we can deal with this situation is to eat starch in moderation while creating a diet which is high in fruits, vegetables, and natural herbs.

Eating Less Meat

Have you heard the horror stories about the meat in our local grocery stores? I have! This is one of the reasons why I decided to practice a Vegan lifestyle. It is horrifying to know that most of our foods cause the diseases we hear about today. How I began to eat less meat lowering my meat intake to 1 meal a day. It was either at lunch time or for an early dinner. This allowed my body to eventually adjust to consuming less meat. I added foods that are high in protein like chia seeds and quinoa seeds and a select few of nuts.

Remove Pesticides from Fruits and Vegetables

Due to the pesticides that are sprayed directly on these foods, Health Specialists recommend buying and consuming organic foods. In some cases, this is true, but not in all cases. Everything that’s organic isn’t considered the real deal. For instance, Organic Kale is considered a hybrid food. I was disgusted to see organic carrots which are a crossbred vegetable. Non-hybrid foods are foods that are grown naturally on this earth. They are pure, electric with nutrients and not crossed with any other foods. When it comes to eating non-organic foods, there are ways to detox these foods. I’ve found this detoxification recipe on YouTube. It’s on Jay Kordich’s channel (the link is here For pesticide removal, they recommend putting your fruits and vegetables in a sink full of cold water, add juice from ½ lemon, 1 tablespoon of pink Himalayan sea salt, soak for 15 minutes and rinse. This is known to remove the pesticides from the outside of fruits and vegetables.

Hope these tips are helpful to get you started! God bless!

Why Becoming a Vegan Saved My Life

Weight loss can be very tricky. One thing I’ve learned is before you can lose weight, one must master what’s being consumed in the body. If we eat crap, we feel like crap, and will eventually become crap. This may sound harsh, but it’s the truth. We are what we eat. I love how Ralph Smart put it, “You’re either eating to LIVE or you’re eating to DIE.”

Since I’ve adapted to a Vegan lifestyle, I’ve noticed an abundance in my health. I’ve prayed for so long while looking for answers. Since I’ve found the answers, here’s what’s been taken place with me mentally and physically:

  1. Weight Loss
  2. Less PMS
  3. Shorter Menstrual Cycles
  4. Clearer Skin
  5. More Energy
  6. Happy
  7. Longer Nails
  8. Hair Growth
  9. Less Anxiety
  10. Spiritual Growth

I’ll go into each of my experiences in a series to explain my life challenges with each topic. If you’re spending money on products to achieve any of these results that has changed my life, you’re searching in all the wrong places. Wanna connect and have questions? I’m here to help! Send your concerns to

Cherish Both Life & Death

crocus-6179It was a very special day for my family. My sister gave birth to my niece at approximately 6:30am this morning.  It was an emotional time for us even though I wasn’t there in the hospital room with her physically. I was able to offer her the support she needed delivering her first baby. My sister and I have been bonding during her pregnancy and patching up lose ends in our relationship. It’s been such a blessing to be by her side during this precious time. Our family history is priceless and will be explained in a later post :-).

Recently, I learned of a death which was connected with my sons. My sons lost their uncle in a tragic event. This was a really sad and disturbing time for us. Gun violence to the innocent is so common in America. This is what took his life. It was painful explaining to my sons that they will not see their uncle again in this life. It’s been a few years since they’ve seen him, but children remember connecting with the ones they love. Most of our family reside on the outskirts of Chicago, but in these times of high crime and innocent blood shed, we keep our distance. My sons would speak of him and his aunts often, because they remember the impact on their lives.

We all have a clear understanding that we have to leave this human life when it’s time. However, losing a loved one hurts and quite often we’re left without an explanation. Death follows life in a cycle to renew and replenish. The humans who have once walked this earth have made an impact. It’s up to our Creator to judge their path. When souls are taken at a young age, I believe these spirits have fulfilled their purpose according to God’s plan.

Cherishing both life and death is like enjoying the change in seasons. With fall and winter, the weather is colder, the leaves turn colors, and the trees become naked. Depending on where you may live, it will snow and freeze the ground and trees. Nights become longer and days shorter. However, look at spring and summer and how everything replenishes. The leaves grow back on the trees, the grass is green again, flowers blossom beautifully, and the weather becomes warmer. Days becomes longer and nights shorter. This cycle is beautiful and is amazing in it’s own way. The loved ones we have lost lives within all of us.
